Kadar Omar And Hannah Irwin Triumph In Thrilling Great South Run Finishes

The AJ Bell Great South Run delivered a thrilling day of road racing, with Kadar Omar and Hannah Irwin claiming impressive victories after two contrasting battles at the front of the field.

Omar produced a powerful display in the men’s race, breaking away early alongside twice Olympian Andy Butchart. The pair quickly established themselves at the head of the field and went through the 10-kilometre mark together in 29:34, setting the stage for a fascinating battle over the closing stages.

But while Butchart remained firmly in contention through the first part of the race, Omar began to turn the screw as the finish approached. The Birchfield Harriers athlete shifted through the gears and opened a 27-second advantage by 15 kilometres, putting himself firmly in control.

The 30-year-old continued to extend his advantage over the final kilometre before crossing the finish line in 47:27 to secure a convincing victory. His ability to maintain his pace and push clear in the closing stages ultimately proved decisive.

Butchart, making his Great South Run debut, finished strongly to take second in 47:49, while Alex Durant of Sheffield AC & Dearn secured third place. City of Portsmouth athlete Lachlan Wellington was sixth, completing the race in 50:27.

Omar’s victory was a testament to his ability to judge a race perfectly. After running conservatively alongside Butchart during the early stages, he found another level when it mattered most and produced the decisive move that separated him from his closest rival.

Speaking after his victory, Omar reflected on the demanding conditions and the effort required to secure the title.

“I pushed myself through the wind. And I gave it all I had,” Omar said. “I’m happy. It’s a great event, you know. Hopefully next year I can come back and race again.”

The women’s race was an entirely different story, with Hannah Irwin and defending champion Verity Ockenden locked in a remarkably close contest for almost the entire distance.

Irwin eventually prevailed in 53:34, with Ockenden finishing just three seconds behind in 53:37. Daisy Glover completed the women’s podium in 54:53 after another strong performance.

The closeness of the battle was reflected in Irwin’s comments after the finish. Rather than being a race dominated by one athlete, the two leaders remained virtually inseparable until the decisive moments.

“It was a really good fun race today. I really enjoyed having a battle with Verity,” Irwin said. “We were literally neck and neck the entire way, I think until like 200 to go.”

The weather added another challenge to the contest, with the athletes having to contend with strong winds for much of the race. Irwin explained that although the wind became a tailwind approaching the finish, that offered little relief after facing a headwind for much of the course.

“The wind was coming from the other direction, so it was a back wind coming into the finish. But that was no easier because it meant the majority of the rest of the race was a headwind,” she explained.

Irwin also revealed how she approached the tactical battle with Ockenden, recognising that the defending champion was having an exceptionally strong day and deciding that working together could benefit both athletes.

“I kind of thought, I think she (Ockenden) is having a really good day today, so we’re just going to have to work together,” Irwin said.

The decisive moment finally arrived in the closing stages, when Irwin found enough strength to hold off Ockenden and secure the victory by the narrowest of margins.

“I was pleased that my legs held on and I managed to come away with the win,” Irwin added.

The contrasting nature of the two elite races made for a memorable edition of the AJ Bell Great South Run. Omar gradually transformed an early breakaway into a commanding victory, while Irwin had to fight until the final moments to deny the defending champion.

With strong performances throughout both races, the event once again provided a compelling showcase of elite road racing, combining tactical battles, challenging conditions and dramatic finishes. For Omar and Irwin, however, the day belonged to them as they emerged victorious on a memorable day in Portsmouth.

Running couple Lily Partridge and Ben Connor take wins at the Great South Run

Pro long-distance runner Lily Partridge and partner Ben Connor, an Olympic marathoner, both took victory in their respective women's and men's races at the Great South Run on Sunday.

Partridge, who was the first British woman at the London Marathon in 2018, crossed the finish line of the 10-miler in 54:29, while Connor won the men's race in 47:19.

Welsh athlete Natasha Cockram was just behind Partridge in 54:35, while Steph Twell, who has competed at three Olympics including the marathon in Tokyo 2020, took third in 54:51.

Afterwards, Partridge said: 'It was a great race, the three of us were together up to about eight miles. I hit the front at about six miles.'

'It wasn’t really planned, so I thought I’d just try and make it a hard run race. It was a good opportunity for me to put myself under pressure and gain some confidence and it really paid off.'

In the men's race, Ellis Cross, the Aldershot, Farnham & District runner who beat Sir Mo Farah at the London Vitality 10,000 earlier this year, came in second in 47:32, while Birchfield Harrier’s Omar Ahmed took third in 47:49.

It's Connor's third time running the Great South Run, having finished third and then second in the past. Afterwards, the Tokyo 2020 marathoner said: 'I’m really pleased. It’s my thirtieth birthday tomorrow, so I’m off to Barcelona tonight and will be celebrating the win.'

In total, 20,000 people took part in the event in Portsmouth on a gloriously sunny day.

Eilish McColgan breaks UK 10 mile national record

Scottish runner breaks Paula Radcliffe’s national mark and Sonia O’Sullivan’s course record on the roads of Portsmouth

Eilish McColgan ended her season in style as she sliced almost half a minute off Paula Radcliffe’s UK record for 10 miles and 17 seconds from Sonia Sullivan’s course record at the Great South Run with 50:43.

The 30-year-old also took nearly a minute off her 51:38 PB as she won the event for the third time on Sunday (Oct 17).

O’Sullvan’s course record of 51:00 had stood since 2002 whereas Radcliffe’s national record of 51:11 was set in 2008 shortly before she won the New York City Marathon.

This is not the first of Radcliffe’s records that McColgan has broken this year either. In August she beat Radcliffe’s UK 5000m mark with 14:28.55 in Oslo. This means her marathon debut will be much anticipated, although she will do well to get close to Radcliffe’s fearsome UK and former world record of 2:15:25.

Like Radcliffe, McColgan seems in her element on the roads. This autumn alone she has won the Great Manchester Run in 30:52 and finished runner-up to Hellen Obiri in the Great North Run in 67:48. All this after a long track season, too, which included finishing ninth in the Olympic 10,000m final in Tokyo in August.

In addition, McColgan also continues to improve on the formidable performances of her mother. Liz Nuttall-McColgan (photo with daughter) won the Great South Run twice in the mid-1990s with a best of 52:00.

On her debut Eilish McColgan won the Great South Run

Eilish McColgan followed in her mother's footsteps to win the Great South Run on her debut in the event. The 27-year-old, running competitively over 10 miles (16km) for the first time, clocked a time of 54:43 to take victory, beating Steph Twell and reigning champion Gemma Steel. McColgan's mother Liz won the event twice - in 1995 and 1997. In the men's race, Chris Thompson became the first athlete to win the event for a third time. Thompson also beat his previous best time, the 37-year-old finishing in 46:56. McColgan said: "I'm so happy. That was such a strange experience. I didn't know what to expect and to be honest that was probably what helped in a way. "My mum said to me 'Don't look at your watch, don't look at times, just be competitive and race the other girls', and that's what I did today.
